The Sam Houliston Story

If you're reading this text, then your browser does not support Java. Here would be an "image tape'' of a view around Balmain, NSW Australia

A picture looking around Balmain, where Sam lives now.

At Apprentice Squadron

Howard Houliston became Sam Houliston very early, a concept developed by Geoff Chapman. Sam's promotion to Corporal Apprentice was an uncharacteristic venture into management which has not been repeated.

After Graduation in August 1967 ...

Posted to Richmond until April 1968, then to Amberley for training to be ready for the arrival of the F111s in September that year. Unfortunately these magnificent planes were not delivered on time, nor within budget.

Out of the RAAF and off to Uni ...

The F111s still hadn't arrived by February 1971, by which time Sam had passed the Queensland Senior exams and left the RAAF to do full time study at Quensland Uni. After finishing first year there he did 3 years more full time at Flinders Uni in Adelaide, getting an honours degree in applied mathematics, specialising in the computing oriented area of numerical analysis.

Into the work force ...

After finishing full time study Sam started working as a trainee analyst/programmer for Philips in Adelaide (in 1975), simultaneously completing a master of science degree (again in the area of numerical analysis) by part-time study at Flinders. When Philips' Adelaide computing operations moved to Sydney, Sam moved too, and is there now - although he did return to Adelaide at one stage for a few years (1981-1985).

The present

Sam is in Sydney, living in Balmain with his wife Pam, working for IBM Global Services Australia and trying not to take life too seriously. Any ex 19 Coursers visiting Sydney will be made very welcome.
